A home that narrowly escaped the devastating Pacific Palisades wildfires this week was tragically split in half by a landslide. The nearly 1,000-square-foot residence, once listed for rent, now lies in ruins. Officials warn of increased landslide risks in fire-affected areas and urge caution.

A Pacific Palisades home that miraculously escaped the devastating wildfires that swept through the community this past week suffered severe damage from a landslide. Photos of the wreckage revealed a single-family home split completely in two. The nearly 1,000-square-foot residence, which was listed for rent on Zillow last year, now lies in ruins.

Bryan Kirkwood, a security professional hired to protect homes that survived the fire, told KTLA that the mudslide likely originated from a property situated just above the damaged house. 'This is devastating. I didn't realize it was this bad,' Kirkwood expressed to the station. 'I didn't see the news, got out here and looked and it didn't hit me until now. Wow. This is a big deal.'Los Angeles County Public Works Director Mark Pestrella confirmed that the agency is collaborating with the California Department of Transportation to strengthen vulnerable areas impacted by the fires. 'To address this, we are developing plans for both areas to capture and hold this debris back as much as we can during a rain event,' Pestrella said during a news conference on Thursday. Landslides are often triggered by rainfall, or in this instance, water utilized during the extensive firefighting efforts, saturating the weakened or loose soil and causing it to cascade downslope. 'No matter where you live in L.A. County, if you have slopes behind your homes or you’re located on top of a slope, these slopes have become fragile,' Pestrella cautioned. 'The soil that is supporting your home all become fragile and damaged, due to the events that we’ve had, wind included. ... There are mud and debris flow hazards that are existing even when it’s not raining, so we want people to be very careful.
