The privately owned rail giant, hauling everything from home goods to coal, saw a dip in earnings in the past year.

“I sense Australia is on the verge of a rail renaissance – a period whereby both the private and public sectors will work more closely together to deliver deep and long-lasting reforms in our sector,” she said on Tuesday.

The company suffered a dip in underlying earnings in the 12 months to June 30, according to accounts obtained by. An 80 per cent jump in fuel and power costs chewed into earnings while floods disrupted logistics, the accounts indicate. Some factors the company cited included floods disrupting services of freighted goods. The wild weather also squeezed the amount of coal, which it also transports, produced by mines, while some mine-specific problems also hit supply.

The accounts for Pacific National’s head entity, Australian Logistics Acquisition Holdings, said underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation fell to $713.8 million in the 12 months from $817.9 million. Its statutory result, including impairments, improved from a loss of $783 million to a loss of $95 million.

He said inflationary pressures were still coming through in fuel and wages. “We pull as many levers as we can, it’s a combination of increasing our revenue quality and making our cost base more efficient,” he said.

‘National disgrace’: Parents have ‘let down’ the children of Alice Springs‘National disgrace’: Parents have ‘let down’ the children of Alice SpringsParents have “let down” the children of Alice Springs as they are faced with horrific domestic violence in their homes and roam the streets to escape it, according to business owner Darren Clarke. Mr Clarke recognised that some children roaming the streets are “looking for attention” but feels sorry for the ones who are receiving no help in the community. “No one is looking after these kids that are on the streets,” he told Sky News Australia. “It just goes on and on, and it’s a national disgrace, I can’t put it any other way, that when you have got kids as young as five, six and seven on the street until 2 am in the morning in a regional town and you’ve got cars flying around – it’s just so dangerous. “Someone is going to get killed here, I hate to say it, someone will, or someone will get injured, or these kids will get injured in these cars.” Mr Clarke has called for “uncomfortable conversations” around the way women and children are being treated in the Northern Territory town. “We have to care for these kids, otherwise, this cycle keeps going,” he said. National Indigenous Australians Agency ‘already doing’ what Albanese wants Voice to doNational Indigenous Australians Agency ‘already doing’ what Albanese wants Voice to doSky News host Andrew Bolt says we already have a “massive” organisation – the National Indigenous Australians Agency – doing exactly what Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says is the main reason for the Voice. “Albanese keeps repeating ... that the reason we need a Voice is that it will mean Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are consulted on the decisions which affect them. Nothing more, nothing less,” Mr Bolt said. “But here's the crazy thing, that is almost word-for-word the mission statement of the National Indigenous Australians Agency that we already give $2 billion a year to. “Now Albanese should know this, he should know he already has this huge bureaucracy doing exactly what he says is the main job for the Voice that he wants, consulting Aborigines about things that affect them.' Mr Bolt said we should stick with the National Indigenous Australians Agency and 'save ourselves the grief, the danger and the cash of creating a Voice as well'. “After all, this agency says it's already doing what Albanese says he wants for the Voice.'
