Padres let Pablo Lopez off the hook early as Marlins snap a six-game skid with shutout win
On most days this season, that’s been just enough for the Padres.Machado reached base twice, Hosmer did so once on a fielder’s choice and the Padres managed little else against Marlins ace Pablo Lopez, leaving Sean Manaea zero room for error in an 8-0 loss in front of 34,709 at Petco Park.
Jake Cronenworth led off with a single, Machado singled with one out and the Padres loaded the bases on Jurickson Profar’s two-out walk only to have Trent Grisham hit a popup to shortstop. Fernando Tatis Jr. is more than a month away from returning from his fractured wrist, Profar and Grisham began the day with averages well below .200, and Cronenworth tipped just above the Mendoza line with one of the Padres’ five hits Saturday.
They will be without Wil Myers for bit longer, too, and might have lost fill-in Matt Beaty for a stretch, too, as the former Dodger exited in the second inning after injuring his left shoulder diving for Miguel Rojas’ second-inning double to right.“It’s definitely frustrating,” Beaty said. “You want to be in the lineup and playing every day. I’ve felt good every day. The results haven’t been there, but for the most part I’ve been having good at-bats. I’ve definitely had a lot more playing time.
First, rookie Joe Dunand, the nephew of Alex Rodriguez, pulled a change-up on the outside of the plate over the wall in left for a home run in his first career at-bat.
