The message comes from a trio of retired federal judges who say they want to protect the democratic process rather than favor their political parties.
Former federal Judge John E. Jones III, who was recently installed as president of Dickinson College, was one of three judges who talked recently about what voters should expect from election day and possible legal challenges that could delay determining the outcome of some races. It could take days or even months to know the final results of Tuesday’s election.
The judges are involved with Keep Our Republic, a non-profit devoted to understanding and heading off threats to “the operating system of our democracy.” The most noteworthy centers on this week’s ruling by the state Supreme Court that mail-in or absentee ballots lacking a handwritten date on the return envelope should not be counted.
On a related note, there’s dispute over whether state law allows counties to notify voters of problems with ballots, such as missing dates, and give them the opportunity to correct the problem or obtain another ballot. Some counties, but not all, are providing that opportunity.
