A Philly teen will continue his father's legacy in an annual greased pole climbing competition this weekend.
, Frank Longo has been a staple at the Italian Market Festival in Philadelphia for years due to his dexterity, skill, and perseverance during the annual pole climbing contest.
The same Axios Philadelphia article continues to report how Frank’s 18-year-old-son, Frank Jr., is taking on the challenge himself in the festival coming up this weekend for the second year in a row. “It’s more about the legacy of it,” Frank Jr. tells the publication. “When you walk up, there’s this omen in the air.”, the grease pole — called “ablero della cuccagna” in Italian — is a longstanding tradition in the country. The pole is roughly 30 feet tall and slathered with lard, and those who successfully summit it have the chance to win meat, cheese, money, and other gifts. These prizes are determined by an envelope at the top of the pole that climbers must snatch.
“I have a lot of respect for these guys — we were having flashbacks of the Super Bowl greased pulls,” told onlooker and South Philadelphian, Mike Watson, to Bill Penn at the time. “But these guys are a lot more sophisticated with their strategy.”If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
