A staffer who was in the room when Shapiro's Secretary of Legislative Affairs Mike Vereb is accused of making a sexual reference about the senator denies it was said.
Sen. Katie Muth, D-Montgomery County, is upset about a "degrading lie" contained in a former Shapiro Administration deputy secretary's sexual harassment complaint about her. File/Screenshot from Pa. Senate websiteA state senator is pushing back on the contents of a draft complaint to the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission that accuses a senior-level aide to Gov. Josh Shapiro of sexual harassment.
In text messages with Rep. Abby Major, R-Armstrong County, the woman said she filed the complaint with the Human Relations Commission, but PennLive was unable to verify that. Muth said she first saw the draft complaint Tuesday, and spoke to a staffer who was in the meeting where, according to the complaint, Vereb made the comment about her. The same staffer, who also spoke to PennLive Saturday, said the account in the complaint was not accurate and that Vereb made no sexual comment. The staffer asked for anonymity, out of fear of retaliation.
The Capitol staffer who was in that meeting where Muth’s name was mentioned said Vereb said during the meeting “I know Katie and I know how to handle her,” but said the sexual reference detailed in the complaint “never came out of his mouth. None of that came out of his mouth. I don’t know where she got that from.”
The staffer said it was not long after that call that an interview was scheduled, and the staffer was questioned for 2 1/2 hours about the allegations contained in the woman’s statement to the EEOC.
