A state Senate committee voted to compel Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw to appear at a hearing next week on the Feb. 3 derailment and chemical leak near the Ohio-Pennsylvania border.

The Pa. Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee voted Wednesday to subpoena Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw to appear before it on March 8 about the company’s response to the Feb. 3 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. The resulting fire and release of chemicals, most notably vinyl chloride, triggered a health and environmental emergency affecting residents in both states. “We all know are at fault,” she said. “Our focus needs to be on restoring Beaver County to 100 percent of what they had before this accident.” Sen. Maria Collet, D-Montgomery County, called the subpoena a “symbolic move” that would be met with “delay and subterfuge” by Norfolk Southern attorneys.
