Advocates are calling for Pennsylvania to overhaul its rules for lead in school drinking water, which are currently limited.
A report by national environmental groups puts Pennsylvania on the bottom tier of states in lead reporting and remediation in schools, with advocates calling on the legislature to tighten rules regarding the hazardous metal in drinking water., issued earlier this year by Environment America and the Public Interest Research Group, lists Pennsylvania, along with 26 other states, on the “F” tier for lead in school water.
Once commonly used in plumbing, lead has been known for decades to be hazardous, staying in the body and causing developmental disabilities in children. Schools in Pennsylvania that do test, and which find lead levels over 15 parts per billion, must provide their results to the Pennsylvania Department of Education and perform remediation.of this data online; although the information is often incomplete, the listing shows elevated lead levels in hundreds of schools across dozens of districts.
However, a bipartisan group of state senators – Devlin Robinson, R-Allegheny County, Art Haywood, D-Philadelphia, and John Kane, D-Delaware County -earlier this year seeking support for a bill that would require lead-free drinking fountains by 2025, similar to the Philadelphia policy.
