A Beaver County police department has come under fire after an officer shot and killed a stray dog that had been left in their care, according to news sources.
“I’m mortified. I just can’t get the vision out of my head,” an anonymous witness said to. “I just can’t even fathom what I saw today. There’s no words to describe it. I’m going to see that probably for the rest of my life.”
The female adult Mastiff was found by Jane Stadnik while on a walk through her neighborhood shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday, near 23rd Street and Lenz Avenue. The dog was soon transported to the police station to try to locate a chip. Authorities initially said in a now-deleted social media post that if the dog wasn’t claimed within an hour, it would be taken to the Beaver County Humane Society for care, according to sources., Ambridge Police Chief John DeLuca explained what happened that morning after 11 a.m.
“While trying to get the dog out of the kennel it became aggressive towards an officer and tried to bite him in the hand. When the officer went to back up the dog escaped out of the kennel biting the officer in the knee. The officers then tried to catch the dog with a dog pole and in the process, the dog turned and lunged towards an officer. At that time the officer discharged his weapon, striking the dog.
According to witnesses, police covered the dog with cardboard in a parking lot, but later discovered it wasn’t dead, and they eventually had to shoot it a second time to put it out of its misery,reported.Currently, an IT specialist is set to go through surveillance footage to see if the incident was caught on camera, according to sources.
