Groff, whoat 39 has a lengthy resume of theater, film and TV roles, beat out Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne and other actors to win his first Tony for his role in the revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along.”

Lancaster County native Jonathan Groff captured the Tony for best actor in a leading role in a musical Sunday night at the 77th Annual Tony Awards ceremony in New York.
Groff, whose father is Mennonite, opened his emotion-filled remarks with a reference to his upbringing in rural Lancaster. “I grew up in a house surrounded by corn fields in Lancaster County,” he said. Groff also gave a shout out to his teachers at Conestoga Valley School District, singling out his middle school drama teacher, Sue Fisher, who inspired Groff and hundreds of other “theater kids” during 40 years at the school before retiring in 2017.
