Pennsylvania House Democrats passed a minimum wage increase Tuesday, pushing the Republican-controlled state Senate to take up a measure that originated with a member of their own caucus.

that the increase – which would hike the minimum wage incrementally to $15 by 2026 - would be included in the final fiscal deal between the two chambers and the governor.

HB1500 would also set the minimum wage for tipped workers at 60% of the non-tipped minimum, greater than the 40% seen in SB743. Pennsylvania’s current tipped minimum is the federal level of $2.83 per hour. “There is potential to finding a middle ground for an increase to the minimum wage, but $15 an hour is not reasonable and is not viable,” Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman, R-Indiana County, said in an emailed statement. “Any possible actions we take must be sensitive to the impact changes would have on small businesses and non-profit organizations.”

“This bill, if passed, will deny young people the opportunity to get those entry-level jobs,” said Rep. Doyle Heffley, R-Carbon.
