State Department of General Services defends use of taxpayer-funded resources used to stage two political-related events held recently in the Pa. Capitol Complex, citing the exercise of First Amendment rights.

The House Republican leader is questioning the use of taxpayer resources to stage two recent Biden-Harris campaign events in the Pennsylvania Capitol Complex.

A spokesman for General Services said the use of state resources are routinely used for events in the Capitol in accordance withthat featured anti-Trump campaign signs and included two former U.S. Capitol police officers who were on duty during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the nation’s Capitol along with Democrat lawmakers.

Rep. Napoleon Nelson, D-Montgomery County, who is chair of the Black caucus, didn’t have a response to Cutler’s concern other than to say, “I don’t know what Chair Cutler is thinking about or working on.”intended to encourage state lawmakers to decertify Pennsylvania’s vote for Biden in the November 2020 presidential election.

However, he agrees with Cutler regarding the invitation of the former police officers, who were political operatives, onto the House floor for recognition by the chamber.Cutler said he respects the First Amendment’s guarantee of freedom of speech and expression but using these state resources for campaign purposes “further erodes the faith and confidence taxpayers have in the use of their funded resources and the operation of their state government.
