Religious leaders from across the state gathered in the Capitol Rotunda to urge their communities to 'forge a brighter vision rather than fanning flames of fear' during this contentious political cycle.
Family conversations about politics over the Thanksgiving dinner table four years ago made for some uncomfortable moments that created lingering hard feelings.
“We gather here as leaders of many faiths from communities all across the commonwealth – not to tell anyone how to vote on November 5th – but to remind us all of the transformative power in the daily choice to treat one another with kindness and human dignity,” the statement says. He said they saw it as an opportunity to inspire “people of faith to come together and to give voice to this desire of so many of our neighbors, the yearning for less division and for peace.”
The Rev. Dr. Dale Snyder of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Pittsburgh called on Pennsylvanians to work "toward a more inclusive and compassionate society" this election season. He ended his remarks with a quote from Mother Teresa: “Peace begins with a smile” and then practiced what he preached by breaking into a big grin.
