The Referend Bier Blendery in Berks County shared two bits of news: It has released its first wines and also been awarded the prestigious Snail of Approval from Slow Food USA.
The Referend Bier Blendery, of Kutztown, Berks County, recently released these three wines under its wine brand, Therein Wine Co.James Priest, founder and blender of Referend Bier, said he believes it to be the state’s first “zero-zero” winery. There’s nothing added nor removed, just grapes spontaneously fermented, he said.
Founder and winemaker Brad Knapp sold Pinnacle Ridge Winery, one of the best-known brands in central and eastern Pennsylvania, in January 2021 afterPriest said in a post on Facebook and the producer’s website that they started searching for a farm home for The Referend in 2015, with our sights set on the sourlands of Central New Jersey, and after a year and a half of striking out “we found ourselves a perfectly suitable blank canvas of a warehouse in Pennington.
The cellar and tasting room are located in Kutztown, at 407 Old U.S. 22, where customers can come in to taste from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon. to 5 p.m. Sunday.Asked about the Slow Food award, Priest noted that “while we understand it’s not a slowness contest, the truth is that our beers are designed to develop at a snail’s pace, and it’s very likely that no other brewery in the world takes as long from brewday to bottle release.
But the biggest sustainability boon came from the move to the former winery and its 19th-century barn that was a Pinnacle Ridge landmark.
