While some in Green Lane Manor say their water bills are normal, others feet away at Green Lane Meadows say their pockets are being drained by the same company.

Residents in a York County neighborhood say that their water bills are exceptionally high, with some claiming they’ve had water bills that cost more than triple the amount of those using the same water company in neighboring communities.“People started taking less showers a day, and they’re doing fewer loads of laundry a day," said Elena Xidane, a homeowner in the Green Lane Meadows community. “We reduced the pressure a little bit in our basement. It did not make any difference.

PA American Water serves multiple homes in Green Lane Meadows, a new development in the area. Reid said she's used the company before when she lived just down the road. She moved into one of the new homes in Green Lane Meadows just about eight months ago and already she said she's noticed a significant change in her water bills.

So, CBS21's Maxine Rose called the PA American Water company on Wednesday to ask them questions. For example, does the rate per gallon change depending on where someone lives? Is there something different about the meters in the community? What else could cause something like this if neighbors have said they know it’s not a leak?

Pennsylvania American Water customers are subject to a consolidated tariff structure, which means that most metered customers, including those in Fairview Township, are charged consistent rates regardless of their location in the state.“The amount we’re being charged for the wastewater portion of our bill is easily three times the amount of our water usage. So, that’s what’s skyrocketing our bills,” said Reid.
