The owner of two telemedicine companies has pleaded guilty in San Antonio to bribery-related charges for his role in a $1.2 billion Medicare scam involving medical equipment. Christopher O'Hara, 59, of Kingsbury in Guadalupe County , was among 24 people charged in the federal case, which also involved call centers in the Philippines and Latin America .

San Antonio-area man among two dozen charged in $1.2 billion Medicare scam O'Hara acknowledged knowing the doctors and nurse practitioners he obtained prescription orders from did not have pre-existing relationship with Medicare beneficiaries whom they wrote the prescriptions for — and hadn't examined them. The doctors' orders were sent to Medicare providers, including medical equipment companies that billed Medicare for them.

San Antonio oncologists, clinical lab settle claims that they participated in a kickback scheme O'Hara faces up to five years in prison for the conspiracy charge and a maximum of 10 years on each of the solicitation charges. U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia set O'Hara's sentencing for Aug. 1.
