A shop owner in Springdale knowingly submitted false tax returns in order to evade income tax, federal prosecutors allege.

Zion Outfitter , known for supplying hikers with gear to hike the Narrows, underreported sales and evaded income tax, according to court documents.

Phyllip Heaton faces five counts of tax evasion, plus five counts of fraud, for allegedly underreporting sales at his store, Zion Outfitter, according to a news release from the Department of Justice. A federal grand jury indicted him Tuesday. In 2021, for example, Heaton allegedly claimed on tax documents that Zion Outfitter made $10.2 million in gross sales, while Justice Department officials say the business actually brought in $12.2 million, according to court documents.
