Owen Wilson is channeling Bob Ross in the first image from his upcoming comedy Paint.
The first image of Owen Wilson as a Bob Ross-esque TV painter in the independent comedy Paint has been revealed. Scheduled for release next year, the movie hails from writer-director Brit McAdams and will be his feature directorial debut. Wilson was most recently seen in Marry Me alongside Jennifer Lopez and as TVA agent Mobius in Disney+'s Loki. Bob Ross has his own history with television - the painter hosted his own PBS show, The Joy of Painting, for 11 years from 1983 to 1994.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Now, veteran comedic actor Owen Wilson channels the signature perm of Ross in the first promotional still for Paint. The image, released on Twitter by IFC Films, showcases Wilson in the starring role of Carl Nargle, Vermont’s number-one public television painter. Nargle sports not only the paintbrush, palette, and canvas of his profession, but clenches a large billiard pipe between his teeth as he looks at the camera, a nod to the tongue-in-cheek nature of the film.
Satires of the famed host of The Joy of Painting have peppered the pop culture landscape in the decades since. From Family Guy to Deadpool, Ross’s famously soft-spoken and cheery demeanor has been re-imagined to feature more short-tempered, substance-abusing dimensions. How Wilson’s portrayal of Carl Nargle will stand out from past riffs on his real-life inspiration remains to be seen, but the casting alone is highly promising.
Scheduled for release on April 28, 2023, Paint looks set to continue a recent trend of comedies whose core appeal has derived from being both self-satirical and self-aware. Earlier this year, Nicolas Cage starred as Nic Cage in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a film that explicitly and determinedly poked fun at its own leading man’s career and embraced the internet meme culture in which Cage has been such a persistent feature.
