Queen Mary has admitted to feeling overwhelmed “at times” in recent months in her first interview since ascending the throne in Denmark.
The Australia n-born royal opened up about her new life alongside husband, King Frederik X, as they moved their official residence to the Royal Yacht Danneborg for the European summer.
“I stood with the children and when you stepped out onto the balcony towards your fate, it was a moment that moved me incredibly much,” Mary said of the momentous occasion. As speculation subsequently mounted about Mary and Frederik’s marriage, the timing of Queen Margrethe II’s abdication less than two months later – after 52 years on the throne – was suggested by many to have been an attempt at damage control.
The royal had a well-publicised reputation as a playboy prior to meeting Mary, now 51, but added that their relationship had finally made him content.
