Blizzard has canceled development of Overwatch 2's PvE mode, a defining feature that promised to separate it from its predecessor. The announcement does, however, come with a roadmap promising significant content additions throughout 2023.
Overwatch 2 developer Blizzard has made the difficult decision to cut the originally planned PvE Hero mode content, but has released a roadmap of expected additions that will be coming to the game over the next few months for Seasons 5, 6, 7, and beyond. Though the promised PvE Hero mode is no longer going to happen, Overwatch 2 will still recieve new co-op story missions, as well as much more content that was previously planned as being part of Hero mode's features.
The Originally Promised PvE Hero Mode Had To Change During the live Twitch stream, executive producer Jared Neuss described the difficult decision that the Blizzard developers were faced with for the PvE Hero mode. Progress on the Overwatch 2 project had apparently been difficult despite the team creating some promising missions and enemies. During the stream, Neuss said:
The dedicated PvE Hero mode may be being scrapped, but there are many other features that were part of that PvE design that will be making their way into the general gameplay of Overwatch 2 instead, as revealed by a new 2023 roadmap, including new enemies, story missions, and more.
