Mammoth Overland arrives at Overland Expo in Flagstaff, Arizona this wekend with two of its new XLE trailers, which it calls, “the Ultimate Basecamp for the End of the World—or Just a Really Long Weekend.
” The feature that calls out from the spec sheet is the bulletproof windows, but there is also a 360-degree night-vision CCTV, remote-activated sonic defense, a deployable 37-millimeter flare launcher , and “quad bear-deterrent systems” to deliver “total perimeter awareness and non-lethal response capability. ” Yeah, but what if the bears come with their own firearms? What then? Huh? If your plan is to outlast the attackers, like a siege attack at the old castle, then there is a “massive” 1,200 Ah battery system, 400-watt solar array, dual propane, and a portable generator that “ensure XLE never goes dark—no matter how far out it goes.
”Price for all this paranoia is $123,994. XLE is built to order and available for deposit now. XLE, also known as “Xtinction-Level Escape,” is the brand’s most capable off-road trailer to date. Built on Mammoth’s proven full-height TL platform, it’s nine feet tall, with 22 inches of ground clearance, and all-aluminum aircraft-grade construction.
XLE “combines the spaciousness families fell in love with in the TL and the hardcore survivalist DNA of the ELE . ” The result is a basecamp that’s equally prepared for a week of backcountry snowshoeing and whatever civilization decides to throw at it. The XLE’s pressurized interior features dual medical-grade HEPA air filtration and bulletproof windows throughout, keeping occupants sealed inside a clean, controlled environment regardless of outside conditions.
“A reinforced rear vault door with a multi-point locking system and spring-assisted windows with remote blast shields mean that when XLE is locked down, it stays locked down. ”I asked them about the bulletproof windows like, couldn’t the bad guys just shoot through the sides of the trailer?
“The sides are bulletproof too,” the Mammoth rep said. Well, then, wouldn’t the anti-bear flares start a forest fire?
“The flares only fire upward and burn out before hitting the ground,” he said. “So no risk of forest fire. ”Okay, then!
“With the ELE we proved that an off-road trailer could be truly self-sufficient and secure,” said Mammoth Overland President Scott Taylor. “XLE takes that proof of concept and scales it up. This is the trailer for people who want a real basecamp—somewhere they can operate out of, not just sleep in. ” The new 1,200-Amp-hour lithium battery system has 50% more capacity than the ELE, fed by a 400-watt solar array.
There is also a dual-propane system and a portable generator for on-demand backup. Integrated Starlink keeps XLE connected at any coordinate. A 12-Volt air conditioning system, 45-liter 12-volt internal fridge, and onboard water filtration system with instant access to clean drinking water round out the self-sufficiency package. Mammoth says the XLE’s situational awareness suite is the most advanced it’s ever offered.
A 360-degree night-vision CCTV array provides continuous visual coverage of the perimeter. Should campers identify a threat—“of the ursine or otherwise variety”— XLE’s remote-activated sonic defense system provides non-lethal deterrence at distance, while quad remote-controlled bear deterrent systems cover the perimeter on demand. A remote-deploy 37-millimeter flare launcher, reloadable from inside the cabin, offers an additional layer of response capability. Does that consitute a fire hazard, like forest fires if you’re launching flares randomly into the wilderness, I asked?
“The flares only fire upward and burn out before hitting the ground,” the Mammoth man said. “So no risk of forest fire. ”There’s also a rooftop observation deck with dual standing platforms, a rapid-access roof escape hatch, and six remote strobe units to complete the picture. For those who require something more permanent, XLE includes dual long rifle storage, a dedicated gun safe, an integrated medical kit, and a concealed under-mattress safe.
A HAM radio, weather station, and Geiger counter ensure occupants are never without full-spectrum awareness of their environment. Though if you’re in a situation where a Geiger counter would be helpful, you might as well give up. On the trail, XLE rides on forged aluminum wheels wrapped in 33-inch HD terrain tires, with dual full-size spare wheels and tires carried as standard. A front-end rock guard shields against debris, brush, and trail impact.
Four passthrough storage bays provide fast-access gear organization, supplemented by a front utility storage box and dual swing-down tables—one interior, one exterior MOLLE-equipped—for a deployable workspace anywhere. An overhead spice cabinet rounds things out, because even operators eat well. Bear deterrent horns.
“XLE is what happens when you stop asking ‘How capable can a trailer be’ and start asking ‘How capable do we want it to be,” Taylor added. “This team built something I genuinely didn’t think was possible. XLE isn’t just a trailer; it’s a mobile operations center. ” This one’s fer varmit...
