Holiday recycling dumpsters in Spanish Fort's Spirit Park are overflowing with cardboard boxes and wrapping paper, leaving residents frustrated. Despite efforts to provide overflow bins, the situation highlights the challenges of managing increased holiday waste.
Dumpsters placed in Spanish Fort ’s Spirit Park for the holidays are now overflowing with cardboard boxes and wrapping paper. “Break down boxes,” said recycler Nanette Tournay. “When we only have this right here. We have four bins and we want the whole city and everyone to be able to utilize it, especially at this time of year because everybody wants to get rid of their cardboard out of their garage and it just helps everybody all around.
” Nanette Tournay is one of a few locals in Spanish Fort wanting to recycle her cardboard boxes and she said she was left frustrated by the scene. The City of Spanish Fort and Waste Pro provided dumpsters for overflow holiday recycling in Spirit Park which was in addition to permanent Waste Pro bins at the recycling center off Ember Lane. Richard Sheely of Spanish Fort was at the recycling center dropping off his holiday recycling last week. “This is just little boxes where we’ve received Christmas gifts,” Sheely said. “I will flatten them out.”“It’s a very good thing for the community,” he said. “Unfortunately, a lot of times it’s overflowing and I have actually come up on my days off sometimes and helped pick up stuff and pack it back into the bins.”“Unfortunately a lot of people come here and dump furniture and oil and things that should go to Goodwill or to one of the recycling oil places,” he said. Damaris Anderson also stopped by the recycling center to drop off some boxes and said she was discouraged by the situation.“Always try to take that tape off and make it flat because when you make it flat that leaves a lot more room for a lot more people to put theirs in instead of it spilling over,” she said. Waste Pro Division Manager Jordan Scott acknowledged the holiday recycling can be hard to keep up with, but he said they have a vision to make things more efficient in the futur
