More than half of Filipinos expressed support for the government’s jeepney modernization program, according to the results of a Tangere survey released on Wednesday, Mar. 22. ManilaBulletin READ:

“Fifty-three percent of the 2,400 survey respondents support the PUVMP, mandating jeepneys to be upgraded to comply with Euro-4 and Philippine National Standards or become LPG-powered, electronic or hybrid vehicles, have modern features, such as GPS capability, automated fare collection systems and CCTV cameras, and requiring operators and drivers to be members of accredited cooperatives or corporations,” said Tangere CEO and founder Martin Peñaflor.

Meanwhile, the survey revealed that only 25 percent of the respondents believe that the public utility jeepney drivers and operators are ready for the implementation of the jeepney modernization program.During the same survey period, Tangere found that a majority, or 88 percent of Filipinos, agree that jeepneys are still the most widely used form of public transportation in the country.

It also revealed that a majority, or 87 percent of Filipinos, are concerned about the possible increase in jeepney fares due to the implementation of the PUVMP. Meanwhile, 62 percent believe that the implementation of the PUVMP will help curb the impact of transportation on the environment, such as air pollution.Survey respondents proportionately represented the following areas nationwide: 12 percent from Metro Manila, 23 percent from North and Central Luzon, 22 percent from South Luzon , 20 percent from the Visayas, and 23 percent from Mindanao.
