Over 50 HISD schools opt in to Mike Miles' campus reform program, district says

HISD Superintendent Mike Miles speaks to parents and members of the community during the second HISD community meeting at M.C. Williams Middle School on Thursday, June 29, 2023 in Houston.Over 50 Houston ISD schools voluntarily signed up for Superintendent Mike Miles' sweeping New Education System, joining the 28 campuses mandated in the sweeping reform program Miles announced on his first day in office, according to a spokesman for Miles.

Miles said he introduced the option to volunteer for NES after a handful of principals approached him last month asking if their schools could receive the same supports as the 28 schools in the Wheatley, Kashmere and North Forest feeder patterns.

"Schools are not just buildings filled with people, they are implanted in the community, so even though there is turnover, which is natural at any school, there's always going to be an overlap in staff that understands community," said the administrator, who was not willing to have their name published.

The decision to enroll in NES ultimately lied with school principals, but Miles said he had encouraged them to communicate with their staffs and school communities before arriving at a decision. At a community meeting last week with Miles at M.C. Williams Middle School in Acres Homes, Principal Juanette Green announced that a majority of her staff voted to opt in to the program.
