Hundreds of animals were rescued from a deplorable situation at a fur and urine farm in Ashtabula County, Ohio. The Humane Society of the United States and Ohio responded to the crisis after the owner's death, finding animals suffering from lack of care and living in inhumane conditions. Steel-jaw leghold traps were found on the property, likely responsible for the injuries sustained by many of the animals.

Over 250 animals, including dogs, foxes, coyotes, and opossums, were rescued from a horrific situation at a fur and urine farm in Ashtabula County, Ohio . The Humane Society of the United States and Ohio worked for several weeks to remove the animals from the Grand River Fur Exchange after the owner's death in late December.

The Humane Society described the conditions as one of the most horrific situations they have ever seen, with animals suffering from lack of food and water, living in filthy wire-bottom cages, and many missing toes, ears, and tails. The animals were reportedly raised and slaughtered for fur, bred for sale as exotic pets, and their urine was sold for various purposes, including hunting, trapping, dog training, and as a wild animal deterrent. Steel-jaw leghold traps were found on the property, likely responsible for the missing limbs of some animals. Responders discovered a coyote slowly dying after being caught in one such trap. The Humane Society stated that there are no federal regulations regarding the care of animals raised and slaughtered for fur. While the Grand River Fur Exchange was licensed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the state lacks laws or standards for fur farms. The Humane Society provided daily care to the animals for several weeks and assisted state authorities with placing over 250 animals with licensed wildlife rehabilitators and accredited sanctuaries across the country
