Over 100 former clerks of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas defended their former boss amid attacks on his character and integrity.

In an open letter, after poetically recalling his life story, the justice's former clerks declared Thomas"a man of greatest intellect, of greatest faith, and of greatest patriotism." They denounced the attacks against him in recent months, referencing the controversy over his relationship with a billionaire friend of his."And these stories are malicious, perpetuating the ugly assumption that the Justice cannot think for himself.

"As his law clerks, we offer this response," it continued, referring to the increasing criticism against Thomas. "Different paths led us to our year with Justice Thomas, and we have followed different paths since. But along the way, we all saw with our own eyes the same thing: His integrity is unimpeachable. And his independence is unshakable, deeply rooted seven decades ago as that young child who walked through the door of his grandparents’ house for a life forever changed."

The letter presented Thomas's life story as one of triumph; he was born into poverty in the segregated South but rose to become one of the most powerful legal figures in the United States. The overall message was summarized when the letter said that Thomas's story"should be told in every American classroom, at every American kitchen table, in every anthology of American dreams realized.

The latest report from ProPublica, published earlier this month, claimed that the associate justice accepted at least 38 vacations, 26 international private jet flights , 12 VIP passes to sporting events, and two resort stays during his time on the court. The report also revealed his ties to a number of billionaire benefactors.
