A wave of car break-ins has swept through the University of Akron campus and surrounding neighborhoods, prompting a joint investigation by the University of Akron Police Department (UAPD) and the Akron Police Department. Over 100 vehicles have been targeted, with valuable items stolen and concerns raised about missing firearms.

Over the past two weeks, the University of Akron and surrounding neighborhoods have experienced a significant surge in car break-ins, with the number exceeding 100. The University of Akron Police Department (UAPD) and the Akron Police Department are actively investigating this alarming trend. On January 20th alone, a staggering 74 break-ins were reported in the area of Orchard, Vine, Power, Allyn, and Spicer streets.

UAPD is leveraging a comprehensive video surveillance system encompassing approximately 2,000 camera views on campus and an additional 140 off-campus views. This extensive network has provided detectives with crucial leads, enabling them to identify and apprehend several suspects. Two adults and four juveniles, the youngest being 12 years old, have been taken into custody. These individuals are facing a range of charges, including receiving stolen property, criminal damaging, and theft. Further charges are anticipated as the investigation progresses. The car break-ins have inflicted widespread frustration and financial losses, primarily impacting university students. In addition to vehicle damage, thieves have targeted valuables such as clothing, money, credit cards, and, alarmingly, firearms. While some of the stolen weapons have been recovered, two remain missing. This development deeply concerns UAPD Chief Jim Gilbride, who stresses the ongoing nature of the investigation and the likelihood of more perpetrators involved. The chief underscores the gravity of the situation, stating, 'It's incredibly alarming. Very, very concerning not just for the University of Akron, but also for the city in general.
