PETALING JAYA: Over 100 people have been arrested by the police in operations in March and April in a crackdown against the illegal sale of fireworks.

Police secretary Deputy Comm Datuk Norsiah Mohd Saaduddin said in a statement on Sunday that the police have detained 120 people for illegally selling fireworks in the period from March 28 to April 9.

"The estimated value of the seized items during the raids is RM3,389,180. Surveillance and inspections will continue to be conducted by police nationwide, including on online sales via e-commerce sites and social media," she said. DCP Norsiah then added that the police have received 6,526 applications to sell fireworks in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya celebrations.

"From that, a total of 5,188 applications have been approved with 1,338 applicants rejected for not meeting the required terms and conditions," she said.
