A recent visitor from Israel, Noam Bedein, is facing backlash for suggesting ways to manage the overpopulated seal colonies in La Jolla Cove, a beloved San Diego landmark. Locals argue that Bedein lacks understanding of the history, cultural significance, and complexities of the issue.

Thanks to Mr. Noam Bedein from Israel for telling San Diego how to manage our beaches. The seal and sea lion colonies in Southern California are severely overpopulated and cannot support the number of animals, causing them to invade La Jolla Cove and what used to be “the Children’s Pool” in La Jolla. SeaWorld “rescues,” rehabs and releases the same seal pups over and over again. The Children’s Pool was gifted to the children of San Diego “in perpetuity” by Ellen Scripps in 1931.

The cove has been enjoyed by swimmers and bathers for hundreds of years. Until recently. La Jolla Cove and the Children’s Pool belong to the people of San Diego and not to the seals.Noam Bedein is a recent visitor from Israel. He spent, what — an hour? — with his family observing La Jolla Cove. Now he presumes to tell us how to manage our coastline! Has he any awareness of the occasionally bloody battles that local residents have fought over this turf and its issues? Does he have any idea of the heritage of Ellen Browning Scripps? As a child, parent and grandparent who has enjoyed and lost the enjoyment of La Jolla’s unique oceanographic presence, I resent his arrogant appropriation of our treasure
