So what's next?
Warning! Spoilers for Outlander season 8's finale ahead! Outlander's series finale brought the show to a definitive close, but a particular mystery keeps the door open for a new spinoff.
The conclusion of this romantasy series has been a long time coming, with season 1 originally premiering in 2014. Jamie and Claire's winding adventure was wrapped up beautifully, but it's obviously a bittersweet experience, especially considering the way Outlander season 8, episode 10,"And the World Was All Around Us" left things just so slightly ambiguous. The final episode of Outlander delivered on its previous promise that Jamie Fraser would die at the Battle of King's Mountain.
Of course, it wasn't quite so simple as that. Claire's healing abilities emerged at full power just in time, and in the very last seconds of the finale, she and Jamie both opened their eyes and breathed in life. From there, the credits immediately began to roll, so we can only imagine that Jamie, Claire, and their family lived happily ever after. Still, this ambiguous ending means we never found out what happened to Fanny.
A couple of episodes before Outlander's big conclusion, it was revealed that Fanny Pocock inherited the ability to time-travel. While down by the river on Fraser's Ridge, she suddenly began to hear the telltale buzz of those mysterious ley lines. It's the final bit of proof that Fanny truly is Claire's biological granddaughter, but that's as far as this story goes. This twist was ultimately inconsequential to Outlander's finale, which is rather puzzling.
There seemed to be no point, except maybe to set up a new spinoff series. What Fanny's Time-Travel Ability Means For The Outlander Franchise It's strange and a bit frustrating that Fanny's time travel twist led absolutely nowhere in Outlander season 8. The finale's recap sequence even included the river scene, but there seemed to be no clear connection to the conclusion of Jamie and Claire's story.
The only logical answer is that Starz is setting up a new spinoff—something to follow up Outlander and expand on the existing spinoff series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood. Fanny is a relatively minor character who was only introduced in Outlander season 7, so it's unlikely that she would be the only lead in a spinoff. It's more probable that a new series would revolve around all of Jamie and Claire's magical grandchildren.
This would provide excellent narrative balance, since the existing spinoff follows Jamie and Claire's parents. Between Blood of My Blood, Outlander, and a new show about Jemmy, Mandy, and Fanny, the franchise would span four generations over centuries of time travel. Such an Outlander spinoff would also have the opportunity to delve further into the Faith story, another element of season 8 left hanging.
While we know for certain that Faith was resurrected and grew up in France, the when, why, and how Master Raymond did so were never revealed. If Fanny and her cousins begin to time-travel in a spinoff, they could piece together answers. A 'Next Generation' Outlander Spinoff Would Solve Other Hanging Mysteries Fanny's time-travel reveal is the most immediate story that Outlander left hanging, but it's certainly not the only one.
Several big mysteries from earlier in the series were never resolved. A prime example is the prophecy that indicated that a Scottish king would be revealed upon the death of a 200-year-old baby. It was this prediction that led Geillis Duncan to attempt to travel through time and murder Brianna, who was conceived in the 18th century but born in the 20th. Claire killed Geillis to stop her, but nothing else was ever said about the prophecy.

An Outlander spinoff that revolves around the next generation of time travelers could shine some light on this mystery, perhaps introducing a different 200-year-old baby or bringing Brianna back into play. This could also tie into the prophecy from Outlander: Blood of My Blood, which indicated that the Scottish ruler would come from Simon of Lovat's line. So far, none of this has amounted to anything substantial, but there's still room for the franchise to change that.
Only time will tell, but it's certainly clear that Outlander has some stories left to explore. 333 9.4/10 7/10 Outlander 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-MA Drama Adventure Romance Science Fiction Release Date 2014 - 2026-00-00 Network Starz Showrunner Matthew B.
