Ohio health officials said they found more measles cases since announcing the first case of the year last week.

The first case was detected in an adult man in Ashtabula County . Ohio Department of Health Director Bruce Vanderhoff said Wednesday that officials identified 10 cases, with nine linked to the first cases last week.

While most of the cases are in Ashtabula County, one of the cases was a visitor in Knox County "who exposed others to measles in Knox and nearby counties." None of the affected people were vaccinated. "Given the measles activity in Texas, New Mexico, and other states around the country, we’re disappointed but not surprised we now have several cases here in Ohio and known exposure in some counties,” said Dr. Vanderhoff. “This disease can be very serious, even deadly, but it is almost entirely avoidable by being properly vaccinated. Measles is especially dangerous for young children, so I strongly urge all parents across Ohio to make sure your children are vaccinated.

The new cases meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's threshold to be classified as a measles outbreak, which is defined by them as three or more related cases. Ohio had 90 cases in 2022, including an outbreak in central Ohio that totaled 85 cases, ODH said, and one case in 2023 and seven in 2024.
