Peter Dutton has hit out at the Albanese government’s landmark housing reforms announced after the latest National Cabinet meeting, questioning the Prime Minister’s credibility on the promise.
The Opposition Leader said while the federal government’s pledge to build more homes amid the nation’s housing crisis seemed viable in theory, the solution would likely not be delivered by a Prime Minister who “isn’t up to the task”.
“It seems to me that this is just another figure the Prime Minister has plucked out of the air,” Mr Dutton said at a press conference in Penrith on Thursday. The housing deal was struck after consultations between the Prime Minister and his state and territory counterparts, in what was an overhaul of theBREAKING: National Cabinet has just announced the most significant reforms to housing policy in a generation.ðï¸ Build 1.2 million homes over 5 years.The original agreement established a delivery target of one million new, well-located homes over five years starting 2024 - which the new deal has amped up by 200,000 more dwellings.
However, these payments will not be made until 2028 – the end of the five-year period – as state and territory governments had already obliged to the earlier target of one million homes, which means only those who construct houses above this target will be incentivised. Governments across all levels must now implement the measures announced today as a matter of urgency.“This will incentivise states and territories to undertake the reforms which are necessary to boost housing supply and increase housing affordability.”
