OurCalling is a nonprofit serving the homeless of Dallas.OurCalling, a daytime homeless outreach center, announced plans to create a “Family Safe Place” to help families and children experiencing homelessness in North Texas., with Dallas ISD reporting more than 3,500 students experiencing homelessness in the 2019-20 school year, a news release said.
“We’ve seen a five time increase in the number of families coming in to seek services, so is in response to that need as we work with our partners to get them a long-term placement,” OurCalling CEO Wayne Walker said. Walker said OurCalling volunteers are out in the community frequently, routinely visiting homeless camps.
So far this year, OurCalling has gotten 1,214 people off the streets, but Walker said the effort takes a significant amount of resources and having a family-friendly spot will help efforts.
