Our recommendation for Texas Supreme Court Place 9 | Opinion
2:00 AM on Oct 19, 2022 CDT In the race for Place 9 of the Supreme Court of Texas, voters have two strong and experienced candidates who genuinely care about the fair application of the law. One, however, stands out as more qualified to handle the duties of the state’s highest appellate court in civil cases.
That is Republican incumbent Justice Evan Young, who in November 2021 was appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott to fill the position left open by former Justice Eva Guzman. Young, 46, impressed us with his strong background, his general understanding of appellate law and his specific knowledge of the inner workings of the Supreme Court. Though only on the job for about a year, he spoke like a seasoned justice. The Yale Law School graduate was formerly a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, whom he told us he admired for his neutrality, and was unswayed by personal viewpoints or partisan politics. “I can hear Justice Scalia’s voice all the time reminding me,” he told us. That was refreshing to hear in these days of political divisiveness. Young has demonstrated he means it, too. As evidence he pointed to his concurring opinion earlier this year rejecting an effort by Republican commissioners in Harris County to block a redistricting plan that the GOP said amounted to Democratic gerrymandering. Young also demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the less publicized administrative role of the Supreme Court. His Democratic opponent, state District Judge Julia Maldonado, has presided over a family court bench since 2017 and impressed us with her dedication to judicial fairness to the marginalized. We’d like to see her continue in public service. However, Maldonado, 61, received a concerning rating in the latest Harris County Bar Association evaluation poll, in which 47.6% of respondents said she needed improvement. And she lacks the breadth of experience and understanding of appellate law that Young possesses. He gets our nod.
