A restructuring entails new challenges. Dallas College needs thoughtful and steady leadership through this major change, and that is why we recommend returning Phil Ritter, 63, to his seat as trustee for District 2. Ritter supports the reforms championed by former Chancellor Joe May and backs his successor, Justin Lonon, who is carrying them forward. He told us that the broader theme for the board of trustees must be to build accountability for student outcomes, which involves setting defined performance metrics in the chancellor’s contract. Accountability and rewards for good results should cascade down the entire organization, Ritter said.
Ritter shares May’s and Lonon’s philosophy that the college system must be more than a place where students enroll to get cheap credits on their way to a four-year university. He said Dallas College must serve traditional students while continuing to embrace public high school students who want to earn dual credits, older adults who need workforce credentials for new careers and people 55 and older who want to become more tech savvy or tap into new interests.
