A Facebook group, 'Buckeyes for a Safe Ohio State', is calling on Ohio State University (OSU) to prioritize more safety measures in the University District following a recent wave of crime. The group, with nearly 10,000 members, launched a petition urging OSU to increase joint patrol coverage, fund more fixed cameras, install more LED lights and reinstate Neighborhood Safety Notices. The petition stems from concerns raised by parents like Jen Allen, whose sons have been directly impacted by the crime wave. An OSU spokesperson stated that the university has already implemented many of the requested safety measures, including increased joint patrols, crime interdiction programs, and private security. The spokesperson also emphasized the functionality of the Community Crime Map, launched last week, as a real-time crime data source. Meanwhile, Governor Mike DeWine recently announced that OSU will receive $257,000 in funding for security projects aimed at enhancing campus safety.
Jen Allen, a mother of two OSU students who live in the University District, said she stays up at night worrying about her kids."That was actually even horrifying for my boys," she said.
The petition also includes information about a meeting between group members and representatives from the Ohio State Police Department and the Columbus Division of Police in December. An OSU spokesperson said the university has already implemented many of the group's requests and included the following details:
The Community Crime Map is back up and running, as announced by Ohio State last week. To correct any misperception, the Neighborhood Safety Notices Ohio State sent years ago were not real-time information and often were sent the following day as a recap or awareness tool. That was replaced by the Community Crime Map at the request of our students and any questions regarding the map or any updates about off-campus crime data should be directed to CPD.
