Researchers at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center are working to develop a special stent they hope will hold open blocked veins and arteries as well as prevent the scar tissue that forms after surgeons perform procedures that go in through the veins.have developed a specialized drug-coated stent that when inserted into blood vessels prevents the scar tissue that forms after surgeons perform various vascular procedures.
Known as restenosis, the scar tissue frequently results in the blockage of blood flow and is the reason nearly half of all vascular procedures fail in less than five years. Currently, a drug-coated balloon is used to prevent these blockages but is not always effective. The drug sticks poorly to the balloon’s surface, and the balloon can only be used for a short time because it restricts blood flow.associate professor of surgery at the OSU Wexner College of Medicine, researchers have developed a dumbbell-shaped stent that solves these problems.
The research is funded by two grants from the National Institutes of Health and American Heart Association, which total $2.7 million. Tillman’s stent also has uses in other potential therapies as well, including a vehicle for targeted drug delivery to prevent aneurysms, a stop-gap measure to rapidly stop bleeding on the battlefield, and as a means to improve the quality of donated organs for transplantation.Akron Children’s pairs sunscreen with scoliosis education at Edgewater this weekendIf you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
