Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles begins his third season with the Buckeyes, and is hoping his group takes a step forward in 2024 the way it did last
year.Knowles spoke to reporters Friday morning following the team's second preseason practice.
Among those who resisted the NFL Draft and returned to OSU is defensive end native Jack Sawyer. Part of the highly-heralded 2021 recruiting class that included fellow defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau, the Columbus native announced himself in the second half of the season that culminated with a dominant performance in the Buckeyes' bowl-game loss to Missouri.
"Jack is always a good-natured personality, but you can see how serious he is about his craft," said Knowles, who attributed Sawyer's 2023 growth to his confidence. "He has seemed to really advance it to next-level stuff.""When he makes a mistake, I don't even get to yell at him because he holds up his hand and says 'I got it,'" he said. "We're glad to have him; that's for sure.
Tuimoloau and Sawyer get the headlines, but interior studs Ty Hamilton and Tyleik Williams also are poised for elite seasons in 2024."I'm good right now with what I've seen," he said. "The important part to get across to our guys is that ... Vince Lombardi said it ... we have to chase perfection. impossible, but you catch excellence in the process. We can never be satisfied with just being good.
