.ByClaytonDavis' current Oscars predictions for best supporting actor: Bradley Cooper (LicoricePizza) Jamie Dornan (Belfast) Ciaran Hinds (Belfast Troy Kotsur (CODA) Kodi Smit-McPhee (ThePowerOfTheDog) Full rankings are here:

delivers two dynamite performances this year, worthy of Academy attention. One as the ambitious and manipulative carny in Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley,” which has him vying for lead actor attention. The other is as the producer, hairdresser and ex-boyfriend of Barbra Streisand, Jon Peters in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza.”In “Licorice,” his role is brief, with about seven minutes of screen time.

The Academy has shown resistance to giving big movie stars “supporting” trophies seen as leading men. Both Christian Bale and Brad Pitt are notable exceptions, both of which carried their movies but weren’t submitted in the lead actor category. Prime examples include Tom Cruise in “Magnolia” losing to Michael Caine in “The Cider House Rules,” which is also the last time the megastar was nominated.

He missed Critics Choice and Golden Globe nominations, and if his team is angling for a late-season surge, he’ll need key mentions from the SAG Awards and BAFTA. A win may be a bit far-fetched, but a nom is not out of the question. Kodi Smit-McPhee leads the charge for his work in Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog,” while Troy Kotsur is a distant second for Sian Heder’s “CODA.” With “Belfast” still very competitive in best picture, I’m still looking at Ciarán Hinds as a possibility to run away with this prize for his loving grandfather in Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast.”

Assuming that Hinds’ co-star Jamie Dornan is as safe as he feels, there is a fifth spot up for grabs that could be between Cooper, Ben Affleck , Jared Leto and J.K. Simmons . Others like Jesse Plemons , Mark Rylance , Colman Domingo and David Alvarez and Mike Faist are still lurking.Oscar nominations voting begins on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022, and will end on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022. The official Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, Feb.
