Oscar-nominated transgender actor Karla Sofía Gascón is facing backlash for resurfaced social media posts containing offensive and Islamophobic remarks. Gascón, who stars in the Netflix film “Emilia Pérez,” took to social media to apologize for the past statements, acknowledging the harm they caused. The controversy comes as Gascón prepares for her Oscar nomination, generating concerns about the potential impact on the film’s success.

Karla Sofía Gascón, the Oscar -nominated transgender actor and star of the movie “Emilia Pérez,” is apologizing for past social media posts that have resurfaced this week. Some of the posts, dating back to 2016, target Muslims’ dress, language, and culture in her native Spain. She also suggested that Islam be banned.

In a statement released via Netflix, where her film is currently streaming, Gascón expressed remorse, saying, 'As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain.' Less than a month after George Floyd's death in 2020, Gascón offered her assessment of Floyd as a drug addict who 'very few people ever cared' for. Gascón made history as the first transgender performer to be nominated for an Oscar for best actress, propelling “Emilia Pérez” into the spotlight going into next month’s show. Netflix will be hoping the controversy doesn’t derail the film’s Oscar chances. Gascón was a regular in Mexican telenovelas before transitioning in 2018. In “Emilia Pérez,” she plays both a menacing cartel kingpin and the woman who emerges after the kingpin fakes his own death, Emilia Pérez. Years later, Emilia contacts the lawyer who facilitated her transition (Zoe Saldaña) to help her reunite with her wife (Selena Gomez) and their children
