ORNL and JuggerBot 3D are developing a 3D printing system that can use both thermoset and thermoplastic materials.
A new research partnership between the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory and manufacturer JuggerBot 3D aims to develop a single 3D printing system for both thermoset and thermoplastic materials. The collaboration intends to create a system that can produce components with varied material properties in a single process.The project, hosted at ORNL ’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility , will combine the distinct characteristics of two major polymer families.
”Automated setup and material managementA key development from the initial project was the automation of the setup process. JuggerBot 3D commercialized a “Material Card,” a database within the printer containing process parameters for different materials. When combined with the ORNL Slicer 2 software and the new calibration technology, this system simplifies the operation.“Operators only need to know which machine they’ll be using.
