Asked if the SA BDS Coalition had raised this issue directly with Pirates, Dadoo said they had written to Pirates chairperson Irvin Khoza and sports governing bodies Safa, CAF and the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee on the issue.
“We have had no response from any of them to our call for Pirates to stand against racism and apartheid and to cancel their friendly with a team representing apartheid Israel,” said Dadoo. But in a long statement on Monday, Pirates went into detail about its struggle credentials and said they did not have the “latitude” to take sides.As a club that has its roots in conflict-ridden South Africa and has been an active participant in the dismantling of apartheid, Orlando Pirates is naturally conscious of the plight of the Palestinian people.
“Of the many forces that seek a long overdue solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Orlando Pirates stand with those that believe a path exists for men and women of courage to continue coming together to find a lasting solution that South Africa proved to the world can be found when there is a will and courage.”
