NASA's Orion Environmental Test Article undergoes a battery of tests to ensure its safety and success for its historic journey around the Moon.

The Orion Environmental Test Article (ETA) was photographed inside the Thermal Vacuum Chamber on April 11, 2024, at NASA ’s Neil Armstrong Test Facility in Sandusky, Ohio. The Orion spacecraft, which will travel 1.4 million miles around the Moon and back, has undergone rigorous testing over the years. The crew module, now known as the ETA, returned to NASA ’s Neil Armstrong Test Facility in January 2024 and completed an 11-month test campaign crucial for its safety and success.

Engineers and technicians from NASA and Lockheed Martin subjected the test article to the extreme conditions Orion might encounter during a launch abort scenario. In case of an emergency, Orion, along with its astronauts, would detach from the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket for a safe ocean landing. Experts at NASA’s Neil Armstrong Test Facility conducted a lightning test simulating the electromagnetic effects of a lightning strike to the vehicle on the launch pad. This Feb. 20, 2024 test confirmed that the vehicle’s grounding path functions as intended, protecting it from damage to its equipment or systems. NASA’s Launch Abort System, designed to ensure crew safety in case of emergencies during launch or ascent, was installed on the Orion test article. The Orion test article was exposed to acoustic levels simulating both a normal ascent and a launch abort scenario. On Sept. 9, 2024, the acoustic test chamber at NASA’s Neil Armstrong Test Facility blasted the test article at a volume of almost 164 decibels
