FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Thursday’s Spring Fest event, traditionally held at Tanana Lakes Recreation Area , took place at the Big Dipper Ice Arena this year after officials with the Fairbanks North Star Borough decided to move much of the event indoors due to the cold.
“Given that it’s been a challenging winter, quite cold, we wanted to move it inside, kind of made the decision last minute so that more families would be able to join us for a longer period of time, basically... We still have outdoor activities, but this way there’s a place to come inside and warm up,” said organizer Caitlin Lenahan, Community Recreation Program Coordinator with the borough. The event, held annually for the last five years, gives Fairbanks residents an opportunity to celebrate the coming spring. This year features ice skating, disc golf, and a retired sled dog, as well as activities from the Fairbanks Children’s Museum. Festivities were themed around a tropical beach party, with leis being given out, as well as free hot chocolate and hot Tang. Lenahan estimated that around 100 people had showed up by noon and said she would not be surprised if the day saw 800 people come to participate. “I just like being able to interact with all of the public and the people and the kids and just being able to show off some places in Fairbanks and show everybody a good time, even if it’s cold outside,” she added. Emily Foster, along with 12-year-old Anabella and 7-year-old Waylon, who were born and raised in Fairbanks, attended Spring Fest this year, with the kids taking part in the ice skating. “I’m bummed out it couldn’t be at Tanana Lakes, but what a great thing for the Big Dipper to do it and post it and let us come in and bombard the whole place.
