While many of us are able to keep from the heat inside our homes — others don't have a home to go to.cbs 21's maxine rose continues our team coverage.she spoke
On Monday, CBS 21's Maxine Rose spoke with organizations and nonprofits about how they're keeping those experiencing homelessness cool during a Code Red situation. She stopped by Tenfold, a nonprofit in Lancaster City, which, according to its website, provides temporary housing and supportive services for individuals, couples, families, and veterans experiencing homelessness.
In collaboration with another nonprofit, Anchor Lancaster, Tenfold has opened its garage on E. King St. to provide a cool space for those seeking to escape the heat and offer resources for individuals experiencing homelessness. "It's too hot to even be outside, let alone be homeless in it, you know?" said Keith Tressler, who's receiving services from nonprofit Anchor Lancaster.Tressler told Maxine that it's his first time experiencing 90-plus degree weather on the streets after becoming homeless just about a month ago. Luckily, Tenfold's parking garage has quickly become a safe haven for him and many others just like him. "We have beds here for our neighbors who work third shift and have nowhere to lay their heads during the day," said Patty Eastep, the executive director at Anchor Lancaster. "We have cold water. We have some cold, wet rags if they wanna just wrap them around their shoulders, that kind of thing." "If I didn't have it? I don't know what I would do. I probably would die," said Stephen Ambrose, who is also receiving services from Anchor Lancaster. But that wouldn't have been possible without non-profit Tenfold providing the space. "We're just really grateful that we can provide this service, even though we are here all the time. But during extreme weather, it's even more of a blessing to our neighbors," Eastep said.Collaboration is something the Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition knows is crucial to success, especially when changes occur rapidly. "The quick turn of the weather was a bit surprising, but this team of providers here goes above and beyond," said Deb Jones, the Director of Human Services at the Lancaster County Housing and Redevelopment Authority, which staffs the Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition. Jones said the coalition works with 75 agencies, including Tenfold and Anchor Lancaster, throughout the county to mobilize efforts during a Code Red alert. Collaboration doesn't stop there, though. Jones said people in the community can help by offering water, IV packets, and other resources to those on the streets as they head into work. "There are limited resources, there's no doubt about that. But here in Lancaster County, there's a pretty mighty group that's always caring for those in need," Jones said.To help them with the services they're already offering or to help volunteer, you can visit their page
