Geologists are exploring storing carbon in Oregon's ancient basalt to combat climate change.
Oregon's state geologist, Ruarri Day-Stirrat, has put forward a new purpose for the ancient volcanic rock lurking beneath the state: storing planet-warming carbon dioxide deep underground to combat climate change.Eastern Oregon's rugged landscape of volcanic basalt, formed millions of years ago by massive lava flows, has long nurtured fertile soil for farming and ranching.
Yet critics highlight that geologic carbon storage may not be the most effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.For starters, carbon capture projects are extremely costly. Efforts to build the world's largest carbon capture plant in Texas have a $1 billion price tag attached to them, for example.Once up and running, the process of capturing carbon can be extremely energy intensive too.
