Conceptual structure of total angular momentum manipulator: a light beam carrying multiple angular momentum modes passes through the manipulator for filtering. Credit: Li et al., doi 10.1117/1.AP.5.5.056002., researchers from Beijing Institute of Technology have developed a photonic TAM manipulator that eliminates barriers, accomplishing on-demand manipulation of both SAM and OAM. Their approach involves the symmetrical cascading of two analogous units: the TAM separator and TAM reverser.
Picture the photonic TAM manipulator as a conductor leading an orchestra of light. The TAM separator transforms the incoming beam into an ensemble of spatially arranged stripes, each representing a TAM mode. A spatial filter takes the stage, determines which TAM modes to keep and which to block. Finally, the TAM reverser brings back the separated beams to the spatial domain, completing the symphony.
Performance of the system in straight-through and selective-blocking cases when multi-TAM states are incident. Experimental results for incident beams; TAM spectra of the output beams in the above two cases. The output patterns are consistent with the inputs at the straight-through cases. For the selective-blocking cases, the spatial filter placed at the separation plane is presented as Sp2. After blocking, the patterns of these beams convert from a petaloid shape into a doughnut shape.
