) - The Orange Beach Fire & Rescue treated nine children who were exposed to a hazardous chemical at a swimming pool at a condominium complex Thursday.
Just before 4 p.m., the department was dispatched to the 27000 block of Canal Road on a report of a chemical release in the outdoor pool area where about 10 children were experiencing a reaction. Responders were met by parents and children who were having difficulty breathing. Crews determined that chlorine tablets were mistakenly added to muratic acid, which created a caustic vapor in the area of the pool, according to the Orange Beach Fire & Rescue.
Firefighters evaluated and treated 10 children who were experiencing minor symptoms. All patient guardians refused transport by ambulance, officials said. According to Billy Widely, marketing manager with Brett-Robinson, partner company Gulf Services is the management company over the Phoenix on the Bay property, the condo where this incident took place. Widely said an employee added chemicals to the pool, which is a regular process there. They’re not sure at this time how the mix up happened but are in the process of investigating it, he said.No occupants affected by the pool chemicals were taken to the hospital by medical staff, Widely said.
