Optimism was linked with as much as a 15% increase in 'exceptional longevity,' according to the research.

Researchers studied data from two cohorts: 69,744 women from the Nurse's Health Study , and 1,429 men from the Veterans Affairs Normative Aging Study . The former has been running since 1976, with participants filling out questionnaires biennially. In 2004, the participants filled out a survey on their optimism, which was followed up in 2014.started in 1961, and respondents completed an optimism test in 1986. Researchers checked to see if participants up until 2016.

However, the authors said the cohorts were mostly white and had higher socioeconomic status than the average American, so their findings might not relate to the wider population.
