Opposition MP warns Russia teeters on edge of social explosion and calls for war end

Former police general Vyacheslav Markhayev accuses Putin's regime of corruption, rising civilian hardship and a looming domestic crisis as Ukrainian drone strikes deepen inside Russia.

Russia faces a growing risk of civil unrest as opposition figures warn that the country is on the brink of a social explosion. Former police general and Communist deputy Vyacheslav Markhayev , now 71, delivered a rare public criticism of President Vladimir Putin and his ruling regime, calling for an immediate end to the war in Ukraine.

Markhayev argued that the war has produced massive human casualties, chronic fuel shortages and a steep rise in living costs for ordinary Russians. He said the government has failed to deliver any real achievements beyond the enrichment of a small elite, noting that pensioners are forced to spend more than half of their modest weekly allowances on utilities while the nation's billionaires increase their wealth to a record level.

The deputy accused the authorities of mismanaging the conflict, allowing attacks on Russian cities to continue and expanding the geography of the war as Western supplies of drones flow into Ukrainian forces. He warned that if the current trajectory persists the country could descend into total chaos and that the authorities would bear full responsibility for such a breakdown. Markhayev's remarks came amid a series of Ukrainian drone strikes that have hit targets deep inside Russian territory.

On Friday night a Ukrainian kamikaze drone reportedly struck the Taneko oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan, a facility located roughly 800 miles from the front line. The following day Ukrainian forces attacked a Russian port and energy installations in occupied Crimea, and a sea terminal in the village of Volna on the Black Sea coast suffered damage from drone debris. Additional strikes were reported in the Volgograd region and in Russian‑held areas of Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia.

These operations were highlighted by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who claimed that Ukrainian troops have hit several military and energy sites deep inside Russia, including a factory that supplies components for Russian drones and missiles. The intensity of these attacks underscores the increasing vulnerability of Russian infrastructure and adds weight to Markhayev's warning about the potential for a broader domestic crisis.

In his speech the deputy stressed that the Russian leadership has lost touch with the needs of the population after more than two decades in power. He pointed out that the number of Russian billionaires has reached a record 155, with a combined wealth of nearly seven hundred billion dollars - an amount one and a half times the size of the federal budget.

Markhayev described this concentration of wealth as a symptom of systemic corruption, noting that multi‑billion‑rouble thefts, the seizure of assets valued at a trillion roubles annually and the arrest of officials at all levels illustrate the deep rot within the state. He called on the ruling authorities to abandon the illusion of a victorious war and to present a clear, public plan to end the special military operation in line with Russia's national interests.

The former police general urged the government to prioritize real assistance for ordinary citizens rather than spending state funds on luxurious yachts, palaces and foreign assets for a small circle of super‑rich individuals. His plea concludes with a stark warning: without a dramatic shift in policy and leadership, the social explosion he predicts could become inevitable, further weakening the Russian state and opening the door for external exploitation
